IN THEIR OWN WORDS

About the Project

VOICES OF THE FOOD CHAIN

is a project of the Food Chain Workers Alliance and Real Food Media to capture and share stories of the country’s 20 million food workers in their own words. Including voices of farmworkers, warehouse workers, meatpackers, line cooks, restaurant servers and more, the project features conversations recorded with StoryCorps, black and white portraits, and a video on the current challenges and victories at the intersection of labor and food.

The Food Chain Workers Alliance is a national coalition of organizations of workers throughout the food system. We are organizing for a sustainable food system that is based on social, economic, and racial justice, lifting up the voices of workers on farms and in food, meat, and poultry processing, warehouse and distribution, retail, restaurants, and food service.

Real Food Media works with partners around the world to change the conversation about our food system, catalyze creative storytelling and connect communities for action. Visit our site to learn more about our international short films contest and pop-up film festivals, our mythbusting resources, our events and writing and to discover ways to get involved.

TAKE ACTION

Almost 20 million people in the U.S. work in the food system, making it the largest employment sector in the country. The vast majority of workers in the food system earn incredibly low wages, with little or no access to paid sick days and health benefits, and the food system is the largest employer of minimum wage workers in the U.S.
Despite a growing interest in local, sustainable, and artisan food, many consumers are still unaware of the struggles of those who work in our fields, process our produce, or stock our shelves. Current food policies prioritize corporate interests at the expense of our health, the environment, food workers and working families.
Join with our allies and ask the next president to take bold steps to reform our food system to make sure every American has equal access to healthy, affordable food that is fair to workers, good for the environment, and keeps farmers on the land.
